Placenta Preparation Services
Placentophagy is the term used to describe ingestion of the placenta after childbirth. This is not a new concept and in fact humans are one of the only mammals who don't routinely consume their placentas. It is common practice in many cultures throughout the world, especially in China and other parts of the Far East where Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners and herbalists have utilized placenta as a healing remedy for thousands of years. See bottom of page for order form.

Placenta Encapsulation
One common way to ingest your placenta is to dehydrate it, grind it into a fine powder and place it in capsules. MammaGoddess Pregnancy & Birth Services offers 2 methods of encapsulation preparation. The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) method and the Raw Dehydrated method.
Steamed/Dehydrated Method
The placenta is gently steamed on a bed of lemon, ginger and hot pepper. It is then dehydrated, powdered and encapsulated. In the process of being steamed, a small amount of “broth” forms. This broth can also be ingested for the nutritional properties or given to house plants and or the garden to nourish. It can also be given to the Earth.
Fees for Steamed Method (optional tincture, broth, and prints)
Raw Dehydrated Method
The "Raw" method skips the steaming process and gets put directly into the dehydrator after it has been gently washed and sliced. Moms who have experienced this method report a noticeable boost of energy. The temperature at which it is dehydrated is at 145 - 165 degrees.
Fees for Raw Method (optional tincture, and prints)

A Note About Some Hospitals
Long Island placenta service providers have been having trouble getting our momma’s placentas from some hospitals. It is very important for you as the consumer to understand that the hospitals have NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER to keep YOUR placenta. Your placenta and what happens to it is up to you just as much as your baby. Know your rights!
I will provide you with a placenta release form which you can give to your care provider to sign and take with you to your birth. Your care provider may at that point try to convince you that it is a waste of money, not medically proven to do anything, or worse even tell you it could be harmful. Just remember this same person will have no problem prescribing off label use of drugs to induce your birth if they deem it necessary and they know nothing about placentas or their proven benefits. The form releases the hospital from any responsibility for your placenta but also makes sure they give it to you without doing anything to it. This is very important. Whatever new excuse they come up with for wanting to take it, it is all nonsense and you must be firm. Common excuses are:
Being sent to pathology for: (once a placenta has been sent to pathology it can no longer safely be consumed)
They may claim it is hospital policy - not your problem.
They may claim it is a biohazard - no more than your baby is.
There are very few indications for when a placenta should not be consumed. Sadly the leading cause is the hospital sending it unnecessarily to pathology. Know your rights.
Best thing to do is find out from your care provider or the nurse manager at your chosen birth place what their protocol currently is (it frequently changes) and get names and keep dates of the conversations and in the end know that whatever argument they give - it is still YOUR placenta and they have no right to take it.

- testing because of a prolonged birth
- testing for a big/small baby
- suspected infection based only on a mild fever during birth generally cause by an epidural
- You were already tested for this during your pregnancy
- They take blood from you at the hospital when you arrive to give birth if they need to test blood for Hep C AGAIN they can use that.
- Come prepared with a small cooler or insulated bag, there is always plenty of ice available on Maternity floors. Keep it cold and in your room until I get there to pick it up.
