Biography of a Birth Junkie!

My name is Shanon McKenna and I am a happy wife, proud mother of two, and Jane of all trades. Whether using my hands, my mind or my body, I've always been a creatrix. I graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 2002 with a B.A. in Fine Arts - Sculpture. My particular interests, fiber and clay and creating art that was both beautiful and useful, was not of much interest to my classmates and before I'd even graduated I knew my talents would be better applied elsewhere.
I enrolled at Sunbridge College for a life transforming two year program of studies culminating in a M.S in Waldorf Education. I got my then dream job of assisting full time in a Waldorf Kindergarten. That fall I was married.
They say (wo)man plans and the gods laughs and so it was for us when we found ourselves expecting our first child a bit earlier than we had planned and thus began the next part of my journey - motherhood.
I planned as best I could for my daughter's birth. We took a Bradley class with a wonderful teacher who taught us all about the process of birth and what to expect at the hospital. By class 3 I knew the OB and hospital were not for me. I found the wonderful midwives of Gaia Midwifery and began planning a home birth. (Can you hear the gods laughing again?) Things did not go as planned and after a long battle with my own body I had my beautiful daughter at the hospital hooked up to every machine I had been trying to avoid. I vowed to do it differenly next time - and I did.
After nearly a year of trying we conceived our son and I immediately began looking for ways to prepare my mind for birth instead of just my body. After much research and trolling of blogs and message boards I had heard enough: Hypnobabies was recommended far and away above any other program. I ordered, diligently did the relaxing wonderful "work" and had the most incredibly beautiful birthing experience ever. To read the full story of my sons birth please click here.
Now a certified Doula and Hypnobabies instructor I am grateful for the obstacles that spurred me down these paths and I am eager to help other women and couples have the birth of their dreams.
